One of our main focuses here at Divine Marketing Group is video production. I spoke with our in-house videographer recently about what our clients should know to help them be best prepared for their video shoot. This discussion led me to create a list of tips that I wanted to share with you over the next 5 weeks. These tips will save you time and effort on the day of the shoot and will help you feel more prepared to record your spectacular video!
I am going to begin this list of tips with the one that I get asked about almost every time we schedule a recording, “What should I wear?” People want to look their best on camera but are often conflicted on which outfit they should (or should not) wear for their video. I want to tackle this layered question so you guys can understand what it is that you need to think about when choosing your outfit (and accessories) for your video shoot.
So, let’s dive right in to this weeks tip: Dress to Impress!
When considering your attire for a video shoot, I find that there are three main ideas that you should always keep on your mind. You should be considering your industry and what your colleagues are known for wearing, your brand image and what your brand represents, and the topic of your video and what you want your audience to take from the video.
Obviously there is far more to your outfit than just these three things (what color you look good in, what the color of the backdrop will be for the video, where will the video be taken) but I want you to be sure to keep these three on the front of your mind when going through your closet. Let me tell you more about why these three thoughts matter so much to your image.
First, let’s discuss the importance of dressing for your industry. If you are wanting to be seen as a knowledgeable leader of your industry then you should look the part. Consider what your industry peers are wearing and what the public image for your line of work might be. If you look like a doctor then people are going to be more willing to listen to your knowledge on medicine. The same holds true for industries with a more casual appearance. You can dress in a casual manner but still try to impress your audience by wearing your nice casual outfit.
Your brand should always be considered! We try to wear blue and gold items as often as we can at DMG because of our company colors and brand consistency. Consider what your brand is and what it stands for. If your attire doesn’t stay true to your company’s brand then the audience may be left confused and distracted from your message. If you choose attire that matches your brand then it is easier for your audience to relate to the information being presented.
Keeping the topic of your video on your mind when choosing your outfit is essential. Don’t wear something that doesn’t match what you are trying to portray through your video.
For example, for a workout video wear workout clothes, for a cooking video wear something you would cook in, or for a video on how to paint a nursery wear clothes that you would paint in. To keep this simple, wear clothing that will promote your video’s topic and keep your audience’s attention on the material being presented.
Let’s finish with 3 simple things to do
and 3 things you should avoid.
Always remember to get enough sleep, hydrate, and eat a light meal leading up to your recording time. Wearing solid colors keeps the attention on you and, more importantly, on what you have to say. Be sure to take a shower, shave, brush your teeth, and keep jewelry to a minimum to not distract the audience away from what you are saying.
Do not wear clothing that makes you feel uncomfortable because a video will show your discomfort. Do not wear old and worn-out garments as they will distract your audience away from the video’s topic. Do not eat dairy before a shoot as the milk or yogurt will create a film in your throat and affect your speaking voice quality.
Staying true to yourself is one of the best things you can do to make the video seem as authentic as possible. If you are true to yourself, your confidence will show through the screen!
