The mountains of Western North Carolina are a painting of color in the autumn, and the vibrant foliage is matched only by the energy of the region’s fall festivals. From high-country traditions to artistic celebrations, these events offer a perfect excuse to embrace the cool, crisp mountain air and experience the unique culture of Appalachia.

1. The North Carolina Apple Festival (Hendersonville)

Just south of Asheville, Hendersonville transforms into the “Apple Capital of the World” over Labor Day weekend for the North Carolina Apple Festival. This four-day event is a true celebration of the region’s most beloved crop. You can indulge in all things apple—cider, doughnuts, pies, and of course, a wide variety of fresh apples. Beyond the food, the festival features a street fair, live music, and the annual King Apple Parade, making it a fantastic way to kick off the fall season.

2. The Woolly Worm Festival (Banner Elk)

For a truly unique and quirky experience, head to Banner Elk for the Woolly Worm Festival. This event is built around a charming local tradition: a race of woolly worm caterpillars. Legend has it that the colors of the winning worm’s stripes can predict the severity of the coming winter. The festival is full of family-friendly fun, with live entertainment, crafts, and plenty of opportunities to cheer on your favorite fuzzy competitor.

3. Autumn at Oz (Beech Mountain)

One of the most celebrated and magical fall events in the region is Autumn at Oz. Held on the grounds of the former Land of Oz theme park, this immersive experience transports visitors to the magical world of Dorothy and her friends. You can walk the Yellow Brick Road, visit the Tin Man’s cottage, and meet beloved characters. It’s an enchanting and nostalgic journey for fans of all ages and a must-do for anyone looking for a unique fall adventure. PLEASE NOTE, due to Hurricane Helene, this event has been canceled for 2025 but it gives us something to look forward to in 2026!

4. Mountain State Fair (Fletcher)

Just outside of Asheville, the North Carolina Mountain State Fair is a classic fall fair experience. Like its Raleigh counterpart, this event offers all the quintessential fair fun: carnival rides, fair food, livestock exhibits, and live entertainment. It’s a showcase of Western North Carolina’s agricultural heritage and a perfect way for families to enjoy a full day of traditional autumnal festivities.

5. Oktoberfest Celebrations (Various locations!)

The beer-loving city of Asheville and surrounding towns embrace the spirit of Oktoberfest with gusto. Breweries across the region, like Highland Brewing, host their own German-inspired celebrations with seasonal Märzen lagers, Bavarian food, and lively music. It’s a great opportunity to sample the region’s thriving craft beer scene while enjoying a festive, communal atmosphere.

6. Tweetsie Railroad’s Ghost Train (Blowing Rock)

For a little bit of spooky, family-friendly fun, head to Tweetsie Railroad for their Ghost Train Halloween Celebration. The popular Wild West-themed park transforms into a haunted wonderland with a spooky train ride through the Blue Ridge Mountains, a haunted house, and other Halloween-themed attractions. It’s a perfect blend of thrills and classic mountain charm.

From high-altitude adventures to small-town traditions, Western North Carolina’s fall festivals offer a bounty of experiences. Whether you’re a foodie, an art enthusiast, or just looking for some fall colors, you’ll find a festival that perfectly captures the spirit of the season.
