Each year on June 5, World Environment Day is the United Nations’ leading global initiative to raise environmental awareness and inspire action. This year, as well as every other year, Azerbaijan has been selected as the host country, taking on the responsibility of organizing and spotlighting official celebrations and activities. As host, Azerbaijan will lead international events and help set the tone for collaborative efforts centered on the urgent need for climate action, encouraging individuals, communities, businesses, and governments to move beyond conversation and create meaningful environmental change.

World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment and was first celebrated on June 5, 1973. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide call for collective responsibility and progress toward protecting our planet.

This year’s campaign highlights climate change and the urgent signals our planet continues to send. Through UNEP’s global initiative, communities around the world are being encouraged to step in, act now, and help shape practical solutions for a more sustainable future through the #NowForClimate movement. There are many simple actions individuals can take to make a difference, such as reducing single-use plastics, conserving energy and water at home, participating in local cleanups, planting trees, choosing public transport or carpooling, and raising awareness by sharing information on social media. By starting with these steps, everyone can play a part in building a healthier environment.

Ultimately, World Environment Day serves as a reminder that protecting the planet is a shared responsibility that extends far beyond a single day of recognition. Each year, the collective action inspired by this day leads to significant positive outcomes around the world. For example, past World Environment Days have seen millions of volunteers participate in cleanup campaigns, resulting in tangible improvements such as cleaner beaches in India, large-scale tree-planting efforts in Ethiopia, and reductions in single-use plastic use in many cities. These stories demonstrate the real impact that coordinated global efforts can have on our environment. As climate challenges continue to affect communities across the globe, meaningful progress depends on the choices made by individuals, organizations, and leaders every day. By embracing sustainable practices, supporting environmental initiatives, and participating in movements like #NowForClimate, we each have the opportunity to contribute to a healthier, more resilient future for generations to come.
