Summer is winding down, the kids are back in school, and there is that familiar itch to get back
on track. If you are a small business owner, that itch usually shows up as a to-do list a mile long.
Post more. Email more. Run some ads. Maybe finally start that podcast you have been talking
about since March. We get it. But here is the thing we tell every client who walks through our
door feeling behind. More marketing is not the answer. Better marketing is.
When business feels slow or stagnant, the instinct is usually to add more. Add another platform.
Add another tactic. Add another hour to your already packed day. But adding more without
having a clear direction does not necessarily make your marketing more effective. It usually just
means you are busier. Before you know it, you have five half-finished marketing efforts
competing for your attention instead of one focused strategy that is actually working. We see
this constantly with small business owners and solopreneurs. You may not have a marketing
problem at all. You may have a strategy problem. No amount of doing more is going to fix that.
Before you add a single new tactic this September, we want you to do something that might feel
a little counterintuitive. Stop and look backward. Take a moment to really look at what you have
been doing and ask yourself what is actually working right now. Not what you think should be
working, but what is genuinely bringing in leads, sales, conversations, or engagement. Then
look at the things you are continuing to do simply because you started them, even though you
are not sure they are producing anything. Finally, look at where your time and money are going
without a clear return. This is not about doing nothing or putting your marketing on hold. It is
about making sure the things you are spending your time and money on have a purpose.
Instead of throwing effort at everything and hoping something sticks, you want to start putting
that effort behind the things that actually move your business forward.
There is a reason back-to-school energy feels so universal, even if you have not set foot in a
classroom in decades. September naturally feels like a fresh start. The frantic pace of summer
begins to slow down, routines start to return, and there is something about the change in
season that gives us permission to reset and start fresh. Smart business owners can use that
energy intentionally. Instead of rushing into the final months of the year already feeling
exhausted and unfocused, September gives you an opportunity to pause, take stock of where
you are, and create a plan that will actually carry you through the busiest stretch of the year.
You do not need a 40-page marketing plan to get started. This week, start with something
simple. Make a list of every marketing activity you are currently doing and next to each one,
write down whether you actually know if it is working. Be honest with yourself. If you cannot
answer that question, that is not a failure. It is a clue. It tells you exactly where you may need to
start looking more closely at your strategy.
Over the next four weeks, we are going to walk through how to build a lean, focused marketing
strategy that does not require a huge agency budget or hours of extra work every week. What it
does require is clarity, consistency, and the willingness to stop trying to do everything and start
doing the right things better. Consider this your September reset.
